A Study on Li Zhengshuan's Faithful Equivalence in His Self Translation-Revision of Mao Zedong's Poetry

Lu Yuyang, Zhang Zhizhong

Abstract: Translator's translation philosophy plays a guiding role in his or her translation practice. Mao Zedong's poetry plays an important and special role in Chinese poetry, and its English translation is of great significance for promoting Chinese culture abroad. Li Zhengshuan has published four editions of the English translation of Mao Zedong’s poetry, which has greatly enriched the translation practice of Mao's poetry. Adhering to the philosophy of faithful equivalence, Li Zhengshuan has constantly revised his translation in pursuit of aesthetic values, striving to achieve "faithfulness", "equivalence", "refinement", and "elegance". Li's self-translation-revision of Mao Zedong's poetry provides references and guidance for future studies and translation practice on Mao's poems and ancient Chinese poems.
